Wu Yumo & Zhang Zeyangping Solo Exhibition - Echo Island

22 June - 18 August 2024 Xiamen
In this place stroked by the waves, we present the depth and complexity of the island in a spatial form with an exhibition titled "Echo Island". Just like the blue colour from the edge of the island shown on the poster,  the classical technique records the traces of the collision between the waves and the island, which is the interpretation of nature by the artists Wu Yumo & Zhang Zeyangping. The island and the sea are connected, a process of defining and dissolving boundaries. They are both a whole and each of them carries a unique world, an individual universe.

These two artists work with sound and moving images. In their mind, “Echo” is the resonance of life, the tactile sensation which connects the island and the body rather than just the reverberation of the sound. They both try to explore the delicate connections between the island and each soul. We see a state of repetition and difference in the works: The surge of the world and the breath of the universe, the tide from the moon and the homesickness from the heart, the weaving of the rope and the flow of the time.

The exhibition places a sound interactive installation "Une Poésie Invisible", inviting every viewer to touch with their body, experience with their senses, and feel the stories connected by the memory text. The video work "Ecstasy" specially presented in this residency reproduces the entire sound and visual environment continuously. Each echo carries a world, and each flip is a discovery. In these echoes, find your own position, feel the resonance with this island, and experience the connection and integration from the inside out.

Two artists have been creating during their many years of travels around the world, and they continued their past creation style during the residency at  KAIPUU ON THE REEF this time, bringing the local natural life traces of Quanzhou Jinjiang Weitou Bay to life on paper. The difference is that this time, it is specially combined with local reefs to form a video installation. We can almost hear the wind whistling in our ears, the sand grains become rounded by the polishing of the tides, and the rocks become angular due to special treatment. These scenes are all echoes of memories generated from their own experiences. When these memories are unfolded again, the echo island they form present multiple possibilities. These echoes seem to be connected in series to create some metaphorical islands. They are the witness of life, the mark of time, and the inseparable bond between each individual and this land.
