Homelanding: "Young Artist Running Program" Solo Exhibition

In the vast land of China, cross-regional population movement has become a widespread phenomenon with the process of modernization and urbanization. Cultural adaptation has become a necessary lesson for every new citizen in the integration process from the homeland to the new city. For those who followed their parents to the new city during their childhood, their sense of belonging and identity formation to their homelands are uncertain.

 

The artist, whose ancestral homeland is Shuangliao, was born in Beijing and grew up in Guangzhou. Homeland, an affectionate term, often troubles the artist with a strong sense of uncertainty, however. Homeland is the inner home and a contemporary social card. In his case, it once became an unspeakable question that was difficult to answer. Differences in language and tradition make it difficult for artist to recognize his homeland as the place where he grew up. The sense of distance from  Shuangliao also broke his sense of belonging to his hometown.

 

Finally, after growing up, with the complex emotions of his homeland, the artist,“homelanding”, set foot back to his homeland,Shuangliao. Unfortunately, the unfamiliar surroundings prevented him from connecting with this land. Therefore, photography, a significant yet intrusive participant in documentation,became the only way for him to keep in touch with his homeland.

 

One day, the artist hypothesized what his childhood memories would be like if he grew up in his ancestral homeland. With the artificial intelligence images, the artist started a new story of his homeland ......
