As an artist born in the Northeast, Sun Lanhe continues to pay attentionto the history and current situation of the three provinces in the Northeast (Dongbei). After returning from studying abroad, he settled inShenzhen in the South, and these experiences gave him a unique per-spective: In an economic context in which financial capital continues toflow into the pores of "globalization" liquidity and traditional industriesare unable to recover, he examines the "northeast", a misplaced northern "enclave", in the framework of the "Global South".
Manchurian Animals is the artist's periodic summary of his work. Underthe framework of Giorgio Agamben's concept of animals, through thereturn of"naked life",it reconsiders the relationship between the imbalance of global economic development and the distribution of powerThe cow, a domestic animal alienated from nature, becomes the mainfigure of this exhibition. In Sun Lanhe's perspective,it is a hybridized ancdeformed signifier in-between local beliefs, technology, human andnon-human of Dongbei which used to be called Manchuria.
