Who Can Participate:

l The exhibition proposal must be primarily comprised of photography, moving image, or related installation works and cannot have been publicly exhibited in the past;

l The exhibition must be curated by an individual holding the nationality of the People's Republic of China or a curatorial group of citizens of the People's Republic of China;

l Curators of all ages are welcome to submit proposals, especially curators at the beginning of their careers.

 

What Should Be Included in the Proposal:

l Curatorial proposal (Chinese and English):

- Exhibition title and concept (500 Chinese characters/English words)

- Exhibition texts and reference documents

- Proposed artist list, artwork list, and descriptions

 

l Proposal implementation schedule

l Proposed scholarly events and/or public programmes

l Budget

l 1-2 examples of past exhibitions or art criticism

l Curator(s) bio(s), a description of the curatorial group (if applicable), ID card copy(ies), contact information (mailing address and mainland China phone number)

 

* Any other supplementary materials which can help to present or understand the proposal are welcome.

* The total size of the above application materials should not exceed 100MB

How to Submit Your Proposal:

Send your submission via email to capmi@threeshadows.cn before 12:00 noon on 18 August 2023.

*Please use 2023 Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image + Your Name” as the email subject line.

 

When and How Will Your Proposal Be Evaluated:

l First Round (from 19 to 27 August, 2023): Valid submissions will be sorted by Three Shadows Photography Art Centre.

 

l Second Round (early September, 2023): Ten proposals will be selected by the Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image Committee. The curators or curatorial groups of those ten proposals will be invited to beijing for a workshop and evaluation event. The Award Jury will vote to select five finalist proposals to be displayed at the Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image Exhibition during the 2023 Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival.

 

l Final Round and Award Ceremony (24-26 November, 2023): The ultimate winner will be announced during the Opening Week of the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival.

 

What Support You May Get:

The Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image will provide:

l A reimbursement of travel expenses for curators or groups invited to join the second round workshop and evaluation event in Shanghai.

l The opportunity for finalists to present their 2023 Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image proposal at the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival 

l The ultimate winning individual or group will receive a 100,000 RMB (pre-tax) cash prize and an invitation to hold an exhibition at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing) and Shanghai in 2024.

l All participating and contributing curators (including previous participants) will receive free access to the Jimei-Arles public service online course "Photography and Moving Image Curatorial Masterclass".

 

Important Information:

l Please read the submission rules carefully. Proposals that do not meet the stated requirements or fail to provide the requested materials will not be considered.

 

l The artworks chosen for the proposals must be technologically safe and operable for the entirety of the three-month exhibition period. The artworks must be able to withstand international travel and shipping during the pandemic, and meet national fire prevention and safety standards for public spaces.

 

l In order to present the best possible exhibition, we hope that all curators or curatorial groups will exemplify creativity and a cooperative spirit, have excellent execution capabilities and a strong sense of responsibility. If the winning curator or group fails to abide by the host institution’s management rules or is unable to complete exhibition set-up on schedule, the Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image Committee has the right to revoke any Award prizes.

l The submitters retain full copyright of submitted proposals. The exhibition and publication rights are shared by the Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image and the submitters.

l The Three Shadows Photography Art Centre website (https://www.threeshadows.cn) and official WeChat and Weibo accounts are the designated platforms for information regarding the Award.

l Three Shadows Photography Art Centre and CHANEL reserve the right to exhibit and publicise all of the winning and finalist proposals.
